Monarchs Win RAFL Season Opener
July 21, 2007 – The Prince William Monarchs opened there regular season with a 21-6 win over the (1-1) Philadelphia Braves. This was the Monarchs first appearance in the newly formed Regional Atlantic Football League (RAFL).
The game started out as a defensive battle during the whole first half, with the Braves limiting a high-powered Monarch offense to only 6 points. WR Eric Wells (2 rec, 25yds, 1 TD) opened up the scoring with a 14 yd TD reception from QB Daryl Overton ( 9/17 110yds, 1 TD, 13 rushes for 56 yds). The Braves answered with a kickoff returned back to the Monarchs 14 yard line. 7 plays later the Braves would punch the ball in from the 2 yd line. Both extra points would fail. The half ended with a 6-6 tie.
The second half was a completely different story, with the Monarch defense opening up and limiting the Braves to about -80 yds on there first 2 drives. The only score in the 3rd quarter would come when LB Marco White and LB Jamar Atkinson forced a Safety. The Braves defense proved to be tough as well by forcing consecutive drive ending fumbles.
In the 4th quarter WR Shawn Penn (4 rec, 81yds, 1 TD, ) woke up the scoreboard with a 20 yd TD reception, from veteran QB Jamie Davis (11/14, 121yds, 2 TDs), and WR Rocky Parrish (1 rec, 25yds, 1 TD) completed the scoring with a 25 yd catch and run TD from Davis. Kicker, Troy Washington, would make one extra point and miss on the other. Defensively, the Monarchs were lead by LB Shea Mills with 8 tackles and interceptions by SS Greg Washington and FS Jeff Overton.
The Monarchs are now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Next game the Monarchs travel to take on the (0-2) Delaware Bison Saturday July, 28 @ 7PM. |
